The following is a list of gems kits available for checkout from the BIO5 Institute:
Chemical Reactions: Students practice their skills in observation, experimentation and inference as they explore chemical reactions; a fun way to introduce students to chemistry. (Grades 6-8)
Color Analyzers: Students investigate light color and how our eyes work. (Grades 5-8)
Crime Lab Chemistry: Students explore the concepts of solubility, pigments and separation as they learn about chromatography in order to solve a mystery. (Grades 4-8)
Environmental Detectives: Student detectives investigate the mysterious mass disappearance of fish, this unit provides students with inquiry-based science learning as they explore an interdisciplinary scientific problem. (Grades 5-8) Â
Fingerprinting: Students examine the similarities and differences between fingerprints in order to develop their own classification scheme and solve a classroom mystery. (Grades 4-8)
Invisible Universe: This unit provides students with the opportunity to explore the electromagnetic spectrum. Students look past visible wavelengths of light as they examine ultraviolet, microwave, and infrared wavelengths. (Grades 6-8)
Mapping Animal Movements:Â Students watch and record animal movements in order to learn more about the organisms that surround them.
More Than Magnifiers: Students explore optical instruments such as magnifiers, telescopes, cameras, and projectors as they learn about physics, optics, and light. (Grades 6-8)
Mystery Festival: In this exciting classroom mystery students study the crime scene, conduct forensic tests and analyze the evidence to solve the mystery. (Grades 2-8)Â
Oobleck: What Do Scientists Do?: This unit introduces students to inquiry and science exploration, key concepts in what scientists do on a daily basis. (Grades 4-8)
Schoolyard Ecology: In a series of outdoor explorations students work in teams to sample, record, and analyze information about organisms and the environment in which they live. (Grades 3-6)
